Plans to provide post-16 education in the Northern Sector are moving forward. Currently, students from the area wishing to study for A-Levels have to travel to the other side of Swindon, or out of the county altogether.
A survey conducted by Abbey Meads Conservatives earlier this year showed overwhelming support for a local 6th form from parents and students.
In a series of meetings, Justin Tomlinson MP has now spoken to the head teacher and governors at Isambard School, the Principal of New College, and the Council’s Planning and Education bosses.
Cllr Peter Heaton-Jones, who is also a governor at Isambard School, said, “In less than two years, hundreds of 16 year olds will be leaving Isambard for the first time wanting to study A-Levels. It’s vital we have some kind of temporary provision for these students, at or near Isambard School, ready to go in September 2012”.
Justin Tomlinson said, “In the long term, the proposed Tadpole Farm development could provide the land we need for a new, purpose-built 6th form. It’s possible this could be a ‘satellite campus’ of New College, which would deliver both the value for money and range of courses we need, as well as good educational outcomes. I’ll continue pressing for the best possible solution for local parents and students”.
